More often than not, we associate wrinkles and fine lines with aging. While getting older and of course, gravity, both definitely play a role in developing facial lines, they are not the only causes. There are many other factors, both internal and external, that can affect the rate at which wrinkles begin to appear.

The major external factor that can cause wrinkles to appear is the sun. Prolonged sun exposure can lead to dry skin and more importantly the loss of collagen and elastin. One way to restore collagen and replenish moisture to the skin is to find a moisturizer that does both. Lucky for you, our Daytime Moisturizer and Nighttime Moisturizer tackle both of these issues! It’s also important to incorporate a good sunscreen with a high SPF to prevent further damage from the sun. I like to use a tinted moisturizer/sunscreen like EltaMD UV Daily Broad-Spectrum SPF 40

Another main culprit to rapid aging is smoking cigarettes. This nasty little habit can speed up the process of aging due to the numerous chemicals they contain. These chemicals restrict proper blood circulation throughout your body, including to your body’s largest organ, your skin, leading to wrinkles becoming more prominent more quickly.

The food we eat most certainly has an effect on our outward appearance. A diet that is high in sugar and processed foods isn’t going to help you maintain a glowing, youthful appearance. On the other hand, eating more fruits, vegetables, and natural foods will keep you looking and feeling your best due to their high antioxidant content. Antioxidants are natural free radical fighters.

We all know stress can have a negative effect on your mind and body. Did you know it affects your skin as well? While a small amount of stress is good for us, high stress levels can age you quickly and are no friend to frown lines. Listening to your body and managing stress through meditation, yoga or quiet time at least once per day, can keep your skin looking refreshed and beautiful.

In my last blog, I wrote about skin care tips to follow for beauty rest. Believe it or not, getting enough sleep happens to help with managing fine lines and wrinkles. Your skin needs time to rest and its pH can even be altered by lack of sleep. Ensuring you get your full 8 hours and using Hard Night Good Morning’s Detox Toner will help maintain a healthy pH and keep your skin cells hydrated. The Detox Toner also helps protect your skin from free radicals, which may also contribute to wrinkles showing up on your face.

Last, the facial expressions you make can actually leave a lasting impression on your skin. If you have watched me on Real Housewives of Dallas, you know I make some pretty crazy facial expressions! Unfortunately, at 49-years-old, it’s hard to untrain my face from reacting to nonsense.  I am constantly squinting, frowning, or furrowing my brow, plus, making my neck retract like an ostrich, which doesn’t do me any favors. Those lines that you see can indeed become permanent. One way to combat this is to use a serum that lifts, tones, and tightens your skin. Luckily, my original product, Facial Cocktail Serum, is made for jokesters like me.  This is one product I will certainly NEVER be without.

While wrinkles may be inevitable as we get older, there are steps we can take to keep them at bay for as long as possible. Take a tip from me, a wrinkle in time doesn’t have to wreck you in your prime!
